 Ali recently caught up with Oya Mustafa, The BD100 Business Developer of the Year 2025 winner, who shared her story, what she&rsquo;s achieved and how she&rsquo;s achieved it.&nbsp;
In an industry often driven by targets and timelines, Oya brings a human-centred, strategy-led mindset that&rsquo;s both refreshing and impactful.
From her early days as a sales assistant at Sky to her current role as Chief Growth Officer, Oya took the traditional route of BD. Her approach was built on connection and building trust, she understood that people don&rsquo;t simply buy what you do but how you make them feel.
&ldquo;Connection is currency,&rdquo; she says. When she&rsquo;s pitching, mentoring, or prospecting, she focuses on building trust in the in-between moments, the building of relationships is an important part of any business development. It&rsquo;s also what led to one of her most rewarding recent wins.&nbsp; In her first call with a client, she built trust early on and that&rsquo;s what won the client over. But Oya is just as proud of the pitches she&rsquo;s lost. "It&rsquo;s not about being liked," she says. "It&rsquo;s about being respected and remembered for the right reasons." She has carried this through into her new role as Chief Growth Officer at Not Normal Group (previously known as Recipe). Since starting this role, she has shifted away from trying to do everything and instead now focuses on choosing the right opportunities to pursue, avoiding feeling like she&rsquo;s in a never-ending hamster wheel and building a culture where everyone is part of the business development process. It&rsquo;s a shared responsibility. This pivot is already making marked improvements.&nbsp; Her golden advice to other BD professionals is to &ldquo;stop chasing and start choosing.&rdquo; When Oya won her award at The BD100 she was about to announce her new leadership role. Winner of Business Developer of the Year 2025, newly appointed Chief Growth Officer and determined to step off the hamster wheel, Oya Mustafa shares how winning the BD100 Award reshaped her career and reignited her drive.
Ali recently caught up with Oya who shared her journey from early beginnings to leading with empathy and purpose, and the lessons learned along the way.

Q: What drives you, and what is it about connecting with people that fuels your approach to business development?
I&rsquo;ve always believed people don&rsquo;t buy what you do, it&rsquo;s about how you make them feel. That&rsquo;s what really matters when it comes to connection. Coming from a Mediterranean background, relationships have always been at the heart of everything.
Nothing was handed to me early on, so I learned early on that connection is currency. Whether I&rsquo;m pitching, prospecting, or mentoring, I&rsquo;m fuelled by those moments when you can feel when the trust is built. I don&rsquo;t do surface-level BD, for me, it&rsquo;s about transformational growth, getting to know the humans behind the job.
&nbsp;
Q: What have you learned about building trust in business development relationships?
Presentations alone don&rsquo;t build trust, it&rsquo;s built in all those little in-between moments. That&rsquo;s often where the pitch process falls short, because you don&rsquo;t always get enough chances to feel what it&rsquo;s like to work together.
A great example is our work with interactive investor. From my first call with Gemma, I knew she was smart, clear on her brief, and that our team would love her. That gut instinct carried into the work we delivered.
On the flip side, even losing a pitch has taught me something. When clients come back with feedback, you realise it&rsquo;s about being respected and remembered for the right reasons.

Q: What have you gained from being part of The BD100 community?
I didn&rsquo;t realise how much I needed this community until I became part of it. In BD, we often put others up for awards without recognising ourselves. 
The BD100 has given me a space to be seen as a growth driver, as a strategic, emotionally intelligent leader. It&rsquo;s also connected me with people who really understand the realities of this role: the ghosting, the graft, the grace it takes to do it well.
I was on our group chat asking for ideas for a growth workshop I&rsquo;m leading. Having that community to turn to has been incredible. And now, getting to judge this year&rsquo;s awards feels like a full-circle moment. I can&rsquo;t wait to see the talent coming through, and maybe steal a few ideas along the way!

Q: What did it feel like to hear your name announced as Business Developer of the Year?
It was absolute shock! I hadn&rsquo;t expected to win at all. That night, I&rsquo;d left a celebration at our Not Normal Group offices just to attend the awards. When my name was called, it took a second to register.
I was already proud to be on the Top 100 list, but winning gave me validation, it helped me straighten my crown. At that time, I was stepping into my new Chief Growth Officer role, and this recognition gave me a lift right when I needed it most.
Since then, it&rsquo;s opened doors both professionally and personally. My confidence feels back to where it was years ago.

Q: For those looking to lift their business development game, what&rsquo;s your golden tip?
Play the long game. Stop chasing and start choosing.
This role can easily pull you in every direction, and before you know it, you&rsquo;re on a hamster wheel chasing what&rsquo;s next. But if you&rsquo;re always chasing, you&rsquo;re not being strategic. You&rsquo;re not giving yourself space to prepare for the right opportunities. 
Championing the business development community and the people driving it is something DNA is proud to do. Conversations like this show that growth is as much about human connection as it is about commercial success, and that&rsquo;s what makes The BD100 so special.

Attracting, Nurturing, and Bridging the Gap for Top-tier UX/UI Professionals

Together with&nbsp;Jo Suter&nbsp;and&nbsp;Dan Prince, I oversee the smooth running of DNA. Through our&nbsp;Executive Search&nbsp;service, I also work in a hands-on capacity, collaborating with our clients and network of senior candidates in filling hard-to-fill, senior-level positions.&nbsp;
In addition to my typical daily duties, I also focus on driving DNA&rsquo;s growth strategy, exploring new markets, and geographical regions and developing novel new approaches to solve our clients' toughest hiring challenges.&nbsp;
Before starting DNA, I worked for a digital marketing recruitment firm for about six years, during which time I was instrumental in the firm's expansion from four to sixty-five employees. In addition, I have experience in the role of Account Handler for multi-service advertising firms. Due to my extensive background, I am very well-versed in the realms of marketing, business operations, and the job market for skilled workers.
To create a company that was unique in its approach, I founded DNA. I want the company to be successful so that people other than my immediate family can reap its benefits. It didn't take long for DNA to become my obsession. It has given me the chance to collaborate closely with relatives while also working in a field I enjoy. I set out to establish an organisation that values work-life balance and provides genuine telecommuting options for its employees. It makes me happy to be able to assist so many people in improving their employment prospects.
When I'm not at the office, I enjoy spending time with my loved ones, exploring new places, and improving my physical health. Likes: Quadrathlons, rugby, cross fit, tennis, cricket, travelling, sunshine, cockerpoos and my family.

Ali Wallace

Here at DNA, I manage the company accounting, terms of business, and human resources. Prior to founding DNA, alongside Ali, I trained in the fitness industry. Initially, for me, DNA was about supporting Ali, but I quickly became fully invested. It has taken a lot of effort over the years, but I am really proud of what we have achieved and the direction we are heading. Outside of work, you can find me at the beach, cooking or working on my fitness. Likes: Baking, Watching my children's sports games, Asian food, and surfing.
 Dislikes:&nbsp;Mud, rain, and discovering what I thought was a mushroom, was actually a kidney.

My role at DNA consists of advising on strategy and growth across the company. Prior to joining DNA, I spent many years across several board positions. When looking at DNA, I see fulfilment, ambition, and growth. I felt that the team at DNA were on to something with their ethos, way of working, and I wanted to support that vision. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my kids, playing video games, and watching Liverpool play football.

Farooq Mohammed

My role at DNA is to recruit across the board within the Events &amp; Media industry, covering a broad and diverse portfolio of candidates and clients, making sure a positive experience for their permanent recruitment needs.&nbsp;
Prior to joining DNA, I worked in recruitment for over 22 years ago, starting as a commercial recruiter before moving into events - where I built up in-depth knowledge and understanding of the market.&nbsp;
I joined DNA following an introduction from a good friend. Upon meeting the team, I felt this was a company that had the same values as myself and all proven professionals within their respective markets. The passion they showed for ensuring an excellent client&nbsp;and customer journey was clear to see, and really resonated with me and how I like to work. &nbsp;
The work-from-home model here at DNA is also a big plus for me as I care for my mother, so this gives me the flexibility that I need. This combined with being able to continue working within a market I love is also a major factor in why I love working here.&nbsp;
